All About Mineral Makeup
Mineral makeup is one the latest crazes to have popped up in the beauty
world. Is there any truth to the claims that you can actually wear it overnight
without experiencing breakouts the following day? Or that it is actually good
for the skin?
Mineral makeup was actually discovered in the late 70's, but has only gained
popularity recently. There is a long list of reasons why mineral makeup is good
for you:
Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic, anti-inflammatory and cannot support bacteria
- a boon for acne sufferers. The fact that it does not clog pores also means
that you can sleep with your makeup on without worrying about breakouts the
following morning.
>Suitable for Sensitive Skin
Mineral makeup is anti-inflammatory and free of chemical irritants such as
preservatives, dyes (usually labeled as FD&C), perfume and alcohol. Did
you know that mineral makeup can be used straight after lasers and peels, when
your skin is very sensitive?
No Carcinogens
If you're concerned about carcinogens in your makeup products - Mineral makeup
does not contain talc, parabens or coal tar.
Other good reasons...
It is water resistant - that means your makeup won't melt off in humid conditions.
Lighter texture allows the skin to breathe and does not enhance wrinkles like
traditional powders
- Non-comedogenic - will not block pores. This is good news for acne sufferers.
- UV protection up to SPF20 (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) - no need for
additional sunscreen - Inert minerals cannot support bacteria
- Anti-inflammatory
- No talc or parabens
- Water-resistant
- More staying power
- Uses pigments (inorganic color insoluble in water) as opposed to dyes (usually
organic - made from coal tar) - Free of chemical irritants - chemical preservatives, chemical dyes (usually
labeled as FD&C), perfume and alcohol. - Lighter texture, allows the skin to breathe
- Does not enhance wrinkles like traditional powders
- Good for sensitive skin - In fact, it is commonly used after lasers and
peels.
What's The Catch?
Not all brands carry mineral makeup - there's less choice. Mineral makeup lines
consist of powder only - and application of powder makeup can be clumsy and
messy - remember what a mess loose powder makes in your purse?
High-End Brands or Cheaper Ones?
The difference between high-end mineral makeup brands and low-end brands is
that not all mineral makeup lines are "natural". Many lines carry bismuth oxychloride,
which is an irritant, and carmine, which is an insect extract. Some of the pressed
mineral cosmetics even have preservatives, yet they are touted as natural.
