Easy Ways To Make Fine Hair Look Fuller, Thicker and Frizz-Free
How do you make fine and limp hair look fuller, thicker and frizz-free without using a million hair products (which only weighs it down) or blow-drying (which makes it dry and flyaway)?
Below are some tried and tested tips.
Choose The Right Shampoo
After years of trying out shampoo after shampoo that ended up with my fine hair looking flat and lifeless, I've come up with a Golden Rule: Always go for clear shampoos.
It doesn't matter if the bottle says 'volumizing', 'for colored hair', or whatever - it has to be clear. If it's milky or opaque in texture, or says 'moisturizing shampoo', it's likely to be too heavy for your hair. You could use these heavier shampoos, but make sure you skip conditioner afterwards (unless your hair is very damaged)
Do Not Over-Shampoo
If you have fine hair, it's important not to apply too much shampoo as it will result in dry and flyaway hair. Use only a dime-sized amount, massage it on to your scalp and rinse it out quickly.
Finally, don't wash your hair every single day - leave one day between washing and discover the wonders of second-day hair!
If you feel that your hair gets too greasy between washes - spray a little dry shampoo on your scalp.
Use Dry Shampoo In Between Washes
Dry shampoo is a great little product - not only does it absorb excess oil in between washes, it also builds up volume in fine hair. We highly recommend Batiste Dry Shampoo - it comes in convenient spray form so there's no need to mess about with hair powder and there's a even a pocket sized version you can carry in your handbag!
Choose The Right Conditioner
Here's a secret - the best conditioners are the after-color conditioners found in hair coloring boxes. The best ones we've seen so far are from Clairol Nice n Easy or Perfect 10 range. Clairol has even started selling the Nice n Easy conditioner independently (but in a smaller tube). Instead of using it to deep condition, use it as a regular conditioner by using a much smaller amount.
After your usual shampoo - squeeze out any excess moisture and apply a quarter sized amount of the conditioner to the ends of your hair from the ears downwards. You can use more conditioner depending on the length and condition of your hair but be warned that using too much will result in greasy ends. A tube of after-color conditioner can last you up to a month when used this way.
Go Easy On The Styling Products
Too many hair products will weigh down fine hair. Avoid the use of heavy gels or serums. It's best to use only one product at a time. If you can, avoid any product altogether.
Color Your Hair
Coloring your hair swells each individual hair shaft and adds body to your fine hair. What's even better, fine hair 'takes' color better than thicker hair.
Darker colors will make your hair look thicker while lighter colors will make it look thinner.
Try highlighting your hair - the right highlights can add dimension to your hair, making it look thicker and fuller.
Choose The Right Haircut
Keep your hair medium length (e.g shoulder-length or just below shoulder-length). Fine hair is not suited for very long hairstyles.
Avoid cutting too many layers into your hair as it can make your fine hair look even thinner. Layers near the crown, however, can give lift to your hair.
